In the early 1800s, the original Galt House was a residence owned by Dr. W.C. Galt on Louisville’s waterfront. In 1835, a 60-room hotel was opened as the Galt House Hotel across the street from the residence at the northeast corner of First and Main. The cocktail menu was designed to be theatrical, leaving guests with a "wow" factor. The "Smoke on the Water" cocktail is served with a smoke bubble on top to be popped. A special old fashioned is served to guests in a box filled with smoke. Aimed to model the classic supper clubs, Swizzle isn't just a dinner spot, it's a social experience.
In 1845, it was such a popular place, it became known as Walker's Restaurant Hotel. In 1851, the restaurant moved to a new building on Third Street between Main and Market Streets and became Walker's Exchange. Walker's Exchange thrived during the 19th century as the Walker family continued to expand their mercantile and provisions business. The Walkers eventually became bourbon distributors and even created their brand of bitters. Walker’s Exchange in the Galt House is a game changer for the hotel and for dining on the Belvedere in 2020.
